Characteristics – features
It plays an important role in many vital processes within the plant, being essential at all stages of plant growth from development to production. It increases production by (enhancing root growth, improving the efficiency of the enzymatic system, playing a role in photosynthesis and food formation, converting carbohydrates, transporting starch and sugars, increasing the plant's protein content, building cellulose, producing starch-rich grains, and regulating ionic balance).
Plants obtain sulfur from the soil through organic matter and minerals, but additional amounts of sulfur are needed, especially in cases of abundant production. Most sulfur in the soil is bound to organic materials that plants cannot utilize until they are converted into sulfate form by bacteria in a process known as mineralization.
The importance of sulfur lies in the fact that it is a component of every living cell and is required for the synthesis of amino acids such as cysteine, methionine, and proteins. It is also crucial for photosynthesis, winter resistance, and the reduction of nitrates to convert them into amino acids.
Leguminous plants also need sulfur to enhance nitrogen fixation efficiency.
