The Importance of Potassium Fertilizer for Plants and How to Apply It: Potassium is considered one of the most important essential nutrients for plant growth and reproduction, maintaining the greenness of plant leaves and preventing wilting. It also acts as a primary transporter of nutrients from leaves to fruits. Therefore, it affects the storage of carbon hydrates within the plant. It is an essential element that cannot be replaced by other similar elements. In this article, we will learn about the importance of potassium for plants and the correct way to use potassium fertilizer. [1] The Importance of Potassium Fertilizer for Plants: Potassium fertilizer is of great importance to plants, as it affects many of their external appearances and vital internal processes. Its importance to plants includes: [2] Maintaining swell pressure in cells; playing a key role in maintaining the plant's green color and keeping it vibrant and free from wilting; promoting and stimulating photosynthesis and protein synthesis; and regulating the ionic balance within the plant. It increases the plant's resistance to harsh weather conditions such as cold, frost, and low temperatures, as well as drought caused by high temperatures. It improves the proper functioning of the cells in the lower part of the plant (stomata), a process called maturation, by activating their opening and closing mechanisms to allow water vapor and exhaust gases to escape from the plant. It serves as an important source of energy for plant growth through the breakdown of carbohydrates. It is an activator of enzymes within the plant. It plays a crucial role in fruit formation and grain protein quality, influencing the nitrogen content of fruits and directly affecting grain weight and number. It plays an important role in the movement of mineral ions within the plant, such as iron and phosphorus ions.
